LESSON 1 助動詞

       1-a.---------------------------------------------------------------------------
         動詞(V)は“can”、“may”などの助動詞によって意味と形の上でふくらむことが
           あります。

       (1) The computer can write a novel.
       (2) The computer will write a novel.	               
       (3)The computer may write a novel.
       (4) The computer must write a novel. 

         たとえば、(1)の動詞部分を樹形図で表すと次のようになります。

       (5) (can write a novel)
                        V
                     /  \ 
            can     V(write a novel)

     1-b.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
       助動詞の“can”は、「能力」、「可能性」、「許可」などを表します。

       (6) Beavers can build dams. (能力)
       (7) Passive smoking can cause cancer.  (可能性)
       (8)You can keep it if you like. (許可)

     1-c.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
        助動詞の“will”は、「未来」、「意志」などを表します。

       (9)  It'll clear up soon. (未来)
       (10) I'll call back later. (意志)

       これらはまた転じて「可能性」、「指図」、「習性」などを表します。.

       (11  That will be our new teacher, I guess. (可能性)
       (12) You will do as I tell you. (指図)
       (13) Babies will cry.	 (習性)

         助動詞の“may”は、「可能性」、「許可」などを表します。

       (14) He may come, or he may not. (可能性)
       (15) You may go now. (許可)

       また、”may”にはやや古めかしい「祈願」の用法も残っています。.

       (16) May you live long! (祈願)

         助動詞の“must”は、「義務」、「推量」などを表します。

       (17) You must go right now. (義務)
       (18) Jane must be sick. She looks pale. (推量)
     
         またこの“must”は文脈によっては「禁止」などを表します。

      (19)You must not speak like that to your mother. (禁止)

         助動詞の“should”は、「義務」、「推量」などを表します。

       (20) You should keep your promise. (義務)
       (21) According to this map, this should be the way. (推量)

     1-g.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
       過去形を持たない助動詞の「過去」は、次の下線部のように”have-en”を含む形で表
         します。

       (22) A:How was the party?
            B:Fantastic! You should have come.

       (23) A:You must have hated it, didn’t you?
            B:I sure did.

       (24) The prime minister cannot have taken dirty money
            under the table.

        準助動詞とでも呼ぶべき形がいくつかあります。 

       (25) I’m going to quit my job.
       (26) Johnny was able to reach the candy box.
       (27) I’ve got to call Susan.
       (28) Windmills used to be a must in the Low Countries.

     1-i.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
       以前は助動詞として使われたものの中には、今では慣用的なイデイオムの一部として
     使われるものがあります。

       (29) Shall I open the window?
       (30) Will you put this back?

     1-j.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
       一見、過去形に見える次のような形は、「過去」ではなく「丁寧さ」を表す表現とし
         て使われます。

       (31) Could you pick me up? (cf. Can you …?)
       (32) Might I smoke here? (cf. May I …?)
