LESSON 8 動詞の転換:副詞的用法

8-a---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  動詞(V)の前に to をつけ、 to V の形にすると、一種の副詞(AD)として機能するよ
   うになることがあります。
   
       (1) We went to 7-eleven to buy some ice cream.
       (2) He was surprised to hear the news.
       (3) He must be very rich to have such a big jet.
       (4) My grandpa lived to be ninety.
       (5) To tell the truth, I’m thinking of quitting my job.

   たとえば、(1)の下線部を樹形図で表すと次のようになります。

       (6)  (to buy some ice cream)
                AD
              /  \ 
           to       V
                    (buy some ice cream)

    単純な動詞(V)ではなく拡充された動詞(V)句が to により副詞(AD)に変わることもあ
    ります。

       (7)  I’m sorry to have kept you waiting.
       (8)  What did you do to be hated like that?

8-c.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    to 同様、動詞(V)に -ing をつけても、一種の副詞(AD)として機能するようになるこ
    とがあります。

       (9)  Seeing him, she ran away.
       (10)  The young couple stood ashore looking at the sunset.
       (11)  Having no money, I can’t go with you.
       (12)  Turning left, you’ll see a big overpass.
       (13)  Admitting what you say, I still think you’re mistaken.
	   
   ちなみに、(9) 下線部の樹形図は次のようになります。

   to の場合同様、拡充された動詞(V)が -ing により副詞(AD)に変わることがあります。

       (14) (Being) Written in simple English, the book is easy to read.
       (15) Having finished dinner, we began to play cards.
       (16) Not knowing what to say, he remained silent.
8-e.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------   副詞(AD)としてのVing に、「〜が/は」など動作主や主題の意味を加えたいときには、 with N を加えた次のような形が使われます。 (17) With Mary being away at school, I don’t have to stay at home. また、(17)はしばしば with のない次の(18) のような形となります。 (18) Mary being away at school, I don’t have to stay at home.
