4-1-NT ［名詞の拡充（Ａ＋Ｎ）］
形容詞（Ａ）と名詞（Ｎ ）の相性関係には、次のように外国人学習者にはき
わめて難しいものもある。
1)a. short + time/distance
b. brief + time/*distance
2)a. high + mountain/*player
b. tall + *mountain/player
２つの形容詞（Ａ）が類似の意味を持つからといって同じ名詞（Ｎ）を拡充で
きるとは限らない、という上記のような現象を教室現場で説得力ある形で説明すること
はむつかしい。上の例で言えば、short と briefのさらなる意味的下位区分の説明が必
要となるからである。学習英文法では、むしろ、組み合わせの「慣用性」ということで
対応して良いと思う。
また、このＡ＋Ｎの組み合わせは、どの言語にも共通するというわけではない
それを示すひとつの例として、
3)a. baby boy（＊赤ちゃんの男）
b. *boy baby（男の赤ちゃん）
4-3-NT-(A) ［後置の形容詞（Ｎ＋Ａ）］
Quirk et al.(1972, p.116)には、形容詞（Ａ）が名詞（Ｎ）の前につく場合
と後につく場合で意味が異なる例がある。
...Thus, the stars visible refers to stars that are visible
at a time specified or implied, while the visible stars refers
to a category of stars that can (at appropriate times) be seen.
4-3-NT-(B) ［ハイフンつきの形容詞（Ａ）］
逆に、前置しかされない形容詞（Ａ）としては、次のようなハイフンつき形容
詞（Ａ）がある。
1) hand-me-down clothes
（お下がりの服）
2) user-friendly system
（使いやすいシステム）
3) would-be bride
（花嫁になるはずの人）
4) now-I-can-tell-you story
（今だから話せる話）
5) gee-I-should-have-thought-of-that tone
（なるほど、それも考えておくべきだったという口調）
これらのハイフンつき形容詞は、最近の journalese の特徴でもある。ちなみ
に、1991年の Time を３冊調べたところ、ハイフンつき合成語1030語のうち、そのほとん
どが形容詞（Ａ）としての用法であった。

4-4-NT ［Ordering］
Celce-Murcia & Larsen-Freeman（1999, pp.393-394）によれば、複数の形容詞
間の ordering については次のような先行研究がある。
(i)Sledd(1959) (ex.both (of) John's last quite rare history books)
(ii)Bailey(1975) (ex.an ugly old gray wooden statue)
(iii)Svatko(1979) (ex.an ugly big round chipped old blue French vase)
ただし、３つ以上の並列はマレでしかもその順序はしばしば入れかわるとい
う。学習英文法としては、Downing & Locke(p.485)にならって次のようなまとめ方でど
うであろうか。
(i)純粋な形容詞→名詞っぽい形容詞（→名詞）
(ii)サイズ→年数→形→色（→名詞）
(iii)短い形容詞→長い形容詞（→名詞）
(iv)一般的な形容詞→マレな形容詞（→名詞）
ちなみに、Quirk et al.（1985, p.437）は、次のようにまとめている。
(i) PRECENTRAL:certain, definite, sheer, complete, ...
(ii) CENTRAL:hungry, ugly, funny, stupid, silent, rich, ...
(iii) POSTCENTRAL:retired, sleeping, red, ...
(iv) PREHEAD:Austrian, Midwestern, statistical, political, ...
(least adjectival and the most nominal)
4-5-NT-(A) ［Ｎ？＋Ｎ＝Ｎ］
Quirk et al.(1985, p.410)は次のような統語的理由から、the bus station の
bus は、ＡではなくＮであるとする。つまり、Ｎ＋Ｎ＝Ｎの形を認めていることになる。
1)a. the large station the bus station
b. The station seems large. *The station seems bus.
c. a very large station *a very bus station
d. a larger station *a busser station
また、一方で、Quirk et al.(1985, p.411)では、
2)a. garden tools=tools for the garden
b. the city council = the council for the city
c. a stone wall= a wall of stone
のように分析し、意味的には名詞（Ｎ）が形容詞（Ａ）に変身していることを認めてい
る。
この本では、Ｎ＋Ｎ＝Ｎという組み合わせを認めないという立場をとるので、
Ｎ＋Ｎの最初のＮは何らかのからくりでＡに変身していると考えざるをえない。この本
では、名詞（Ｎ）の形容詞（Ａ）化に次の４つの型を想定する。上の bus station は次
の child care と同じ用法ということになる。（cf. 8-6[OM-NI CVT 
])
3)a. the child care (child＋CVT())
b. the childish trick (child＋CVT(-ish))
c. the child's mother (child＋CVT(-'s))
d. the memory of the child (CVT(of)＋the child)
4-5-NT-(B) ［compound stress pattern］ cf.2-3［複合語]
これら Ｎ＋Ｎ からなる複合語には characteristic stress pattern がある
(Givón,T. p.259)。つまり、primary word-stress が必ず compounds の最初の名詞(Ｎ)
にくるのである。
1)a. a BIRD-house (a house where birds live)
b. *a bird-HOUSE
2)a. a MAIL-man (a person who delivers the mail)
b. *a mail-MAN
ちなみに、Ａ＋Ｎ からなる複合語の場合も、複合語なのか、単なるＡ＋Ｎなの
かはこの stress pattern によってわかる。
3)a. a BLACK-bird (a species of birds)
b. a black BIRD (any bird that is black)
4)a. a WHITE House (the President's residence)
b. a white HOUSE (a house that is white)
4-6-NT-(A) ［６段階のＡっぽさ］
Quirk et al.(1985, pp.402-404) は、形容詞(Ａ)に次のような４つの基準
を設定し、
(i) in attributive function
ex.an ugly painting, the round table
(ii) in predicative function
ex.The painting is ugly.
(iii) very +
ex.The children are very happy.
(iv) comparative and superlative
ex. The children are happier now.
They are the happiest people I know.
いろいろの形容詞を、上の (i) ～(iv) により下位区分すると、その「形容詞っぽさ」
に応じて次のように６つのタイプ([1]～[6])に分かれるとした。
(i) (ii) (iii) (iv)
[1] hungry ＋ ＋ ＋ ＋
[2] infinite ＋ ＋ － －
[3] old ＋ － ＋ ＋
[4] afraid ？ ＋ ＋ ＋
[5] utter ＋ － － －
[6] asleep － ＋ － －
そして、 [1]-[2]をcentral adjectives、[3]-[6]をperipheral adjectives と呼ぶ。
（ただし、John is old. はＯＫなので [3]の(ii)は －ではなく＋であろう）
このように形容詞（Ａ)をその「形容詞っぽさ」に応じていくつかに下位区分
をしても、基本的には、２つの形容詞（Ａ）の意味が似ているからといって同じ文法的
ふるまいをする、とはかぎらない。下の例からも、それぞれの類義語が異なった統語的
な特徴をもっていることは一目瞭然である。
1)a. It's likely/probable that he'll be late. (八木、p.57)
b. He is likely/*probable to be late.
2)a. The child was sick/ill/poorly/unwell.
b. A sick/?ill/*poorly/*unwell child was lying in the bed.
なお、八木（p.57）によれば、Hudson et al.(1996)には、類義語の中の
(i)異なった統語形式をとるもの、(ii)文法機能が異なるもの、(iii)修飾語選択が
異なるもの、(ivI語順が異なるものについて詳しい解説があるという。
4-6-NT-(B) ［Ａ＋Ｎ/*be＋Ａ］
（ハイフンつき複合語もＡとみなすと）一般的に、ＡがＡ＋Ｎの形でみとめ
られない場合より、be＋Ａの形で認められない場合の方が多い。したがって、Ａ＋Ｎの
Ａの方が be＋ＡのＡより形容詞っぽさの中核にある、と言えよう。当然、学習英文法で
はＡ＋Ｎの型をより早く、よりたくさん教えるべきであろう
1)a. The main house was there. （Givón,T. p.272）
b. *The house was main.
2)a. The chief reason was ...
b. *The reason was chief.
3)a. He was a total stranger.
b. *The stranger was total.
4)a. the daily newspaper
b. *The newspaper is daily.
5)a. a drunken driver (安井、1994, p.621)
b. *The driver was drunken.
ただし、次のような例も。
