26-1-NT ［Ｓ－ＡＤ転換子(S-AD CVT)：because］
この because は、伝統文法では「接続詞」(conjunction)と呼ばれる。しかし、
「接続詞」という文法カテゴリ－は、拡充に関わるもの（and や but などこの本で言う
「拡充子」）と転換に関わるもの（while や because などこの本で言う「転換子」）と
の区別をしない。新しい学習文法の立場としては、ある意味のかたまりにまた別の意味の
かたまりが付加されたとき、全体として文法特性が変わる（転換）か変わらない（拡充）
かということを重要視したい。
ただし、いわゆる接続詞の中には「転換子」と「拡充子」の中間的な存在と
言わざるを得ないものもある。Quirk et al. (1985, p.90) は、central elements と
peripheral elements of the clause の間(2.13)、adjuncts, subjuncts, disjuncts と
conjuncts の間(2.15)、complements と adverbialsの間(2.17f)、modification と
complementationの間(2.33)に gradience（gradient とはなっていない）ありとしている
が、for の場合、subordinator のif とco-ordinating conjunction の and の間の中間
的存在であるとする。
ちなみに、McCawley, J.D.(1988, p.268）の次の例は、Gapping の有無が拡充
子と転換子の区別をするバロメーターになる可能性を示している。
1)a. Tom ordered lasagna and Jane 
manicotti.
b. *Tom ordered lasagna before Jane manicotti.
26-2-NT ［Ｓ－ＡＤ転換子の when と Ｓ－Ｎ転換子の when］
次の例で、1) の when は S-AD 転換子、2) の when は S-N 転換子である。
1) When he comes back, I'll tell you. (S-AD CVT)
2) I'll tell you when he will come back. (S-N CVT)
Ｎ節の中では will が使われ、ＡＤ節の中では現在形が使われる。ＡＤ節の中であえて
will が使われる 3-a) は、3-b) のような意味となる。
3)a. If he will come back, I'll tell you so.
b. = If he is willing to come back, I'll tell you so.
ただし、次のような例ではこの２つが区別できない。
4) I was lost in thought and I didn't notice when my name was
called.
26-3-NT ［Ｓ－ＡＤ転換子(接続詞)とＮ－ＡＤ転換子(前置詞)］
because K-S/because of Ｎのように いわゆる接続詞（この本の S-AD CVT）
といわゆる前置詞（この本のN-AD CVT）の区別がはっきりしているものもあるが、
1)a. He failed in the exam because he was lazy. (=本文(27-a))
b. He failed in the exam because of his laziness. (=本文(28-a))
次のような since や untilでは、その区別はできない。
2)a. That actress has not appeared on TV since she retired.
(=本文(25))
b. That actress has not appeared on TV since her retirement.
3)a. We'll wait until he arrives. (=本文(26))
b. We'll wait until his arrival.
いわゆる接続詞と前置詞の区別をあまり重要視しない文法家としては、
McCawley, J.D.(1988, p.191)、今井ほか（p.237)、Lobeck, A.(p.203) などがある。
例えば、McCawley, J.D.(1988, p.190) は、 Jespersen, O.(p.89) にならい、
次の before や until のような "subordinate conjuntions" を 一種の前置詞、
"prepositions with sentential objects"、として扱うとしている。
4)a. John phoned me before he left.
b. Sam worked at a second job until he had paid off his debts.
また、今井ほか（p.237)は、次の 5-a), 5-b) で、
5)a. John came after midnight.
b. John came after he completed the report.
after は、名詞句も節も補部として従えることができる従属接続詞であるとする。
また、Lobeck, A.(p.293)は、subordinating prepositions として次のような
after, because, while, when などをあげている。
5)a. Mary left after she talked to John.
b. Mary left because she was depressed.
c. Mary left while no one was looking.
c. Mary left when her mother called.
ちなみに、ほとんどの N-AD CVT(前置詞）はＡＤ句だけでなくＡ句も生み出す
が、S-AD CVT(接続詞）はＡ節を生み出すことはマレである。そのマレな例としては、
6) He looked like a cat after it had eaten a canary.
（彼は小鳥を食べた後の猫のように後ろめたそうに見えた）
26-5-NT ［飛び石転換子］
Quirk et al. (1985, p.999)は、次の 1-a)～1-c) などを Correlative
Subordinators と呼び、
1)a. as ... as ...
b. so ... that ...
c. the ...the ...
次の 2-a) ～ 2-c) などを Correlative Coordinatorsと呼ぶ。
2)a. both ... and ...
b. neither ... nor ...
c. not ... but ...
26-6-NT-(A) ［SUBJ はＳ拡充子か、ＡＤ拡充子か］
本文では、SUBJ は次の 1) のようにＳ拡充子として扱われるが、2) のよう
なＡＤ節全体にかかるＡＤ拡充子として扱うこともできる。

26-6-NT-(B) ［仮定法の歴史］
中尾・児馬（pp.142-149）（要旨）によれば、仮定法（直接法とは異なる動詞
の語形)は、初期英語では「期待」、「想像」などを表す形として主節でも従節でも使わ
れた。
(i) 主節における仮定法（願望・祈願・誓言を表す）
(=to God almighty be thank ...)
(ii) 従節における仮定法（思考の動詞の補文）
(=I think that not many were beyond the Humber)
つまり、頭の中で考えている主観的思考に仮定法を用いたのである。そして、この古い
用法がやがて直接法あるいは法助動詞を用いた迂言的構造へと姿を変えるのである。
26-6-NT-(C) ［「条件」と「非現実」の区別つかない if の例］
de Chene(p.129)によれば、次の 1) には、
1) If only Sue won.
開放の解釈（過去）、つまり、「スーがかったとすればいいなあ」と、反事実的な解釈
(現在）、つまり、「スーがいつも勝っていればいいのになあ」がある。ただし、次の
2) の場合は、帰結節の形で区別がつく。
2) If only Sue won, I wouldn't mind supporting her
gambling habit.
（de Chene の「開放」は「条件」のこと！要するに、過去の条件と
現在の非現実で区別できないことがあるということ。）
26-8-NT ［ＡＤ節中の｛非現実｝］
例文 1) のようなＮ節中の｛非現実｝、例文 2) のようなＡ節中の｛非現実｝
があることは、本文でものべたが、
1) I wish I were a bird. (=本文 50)
2) She looked as if she had seen a ghost or something. (=本文51)
if節以外にも{非現実｝を表すＡＤ節は存在する。例文 3-b) の before節がそれである。
3)a. I bought a car before he bought one. （安井、1987, p.189)
b. I bought a car before he had bought one.
つまり、before 節内の過去完了は反事実の仮定法をあらわすのである。
26-9-NT ［I wouldn't do such a thing.］
次の 1-a) と 2-a) の I wouldn't ... は異なる。それぞれ、1-b), 2-b)
のように分析されるからである。
1)a. I wouldn't do such a thing.
b. ←SUBJ + [[SUBJ+I] will not do such a thing]
2)a. If I were you, I wouldn't do such a thing.
b. ←SUBJ + [I will not do such a thing]
一方、語中に inherently に存在する｛非現実｝の例としては、
