LESSON 27 S−A転換子(S-A CVT):that/which/who(m)など

 27-1 [S−A転換子(S-A CVT):that]

(1)a. The fish was caught by John.
    b. The fish that was caught by John was big.
    c. The fish caught by John was big.
      (=(1b))

 27-2 [空所()]
上で The fish was caught by John.
(S-A CVT)の that によって that was caught by John という形容詞(A)

   (2) (the fish) [the fish was caught by John]
(the fish) [that + the fish was caught by John]
(the fish) [that the fish was caught by John]
(the fish) [that was caught by John]

したがって、(1b) 中の、the fish that was caught by John の厳密な
形は、the fish that was caught by John となり、その樹形図は、次

       (3) (the fish that was caught by John)
              N
             / \
            N A
        (the fish) / \
             CVT[S-A] S
              (that) / \
                 N V
(the fish) (was caught by John)
               →

   (4) The fish that John caught was big.

   (5) (the fish) [John caught the fish]
(the fish) [that + John caught the fish]
(the fish) [that John caught the fish]
(the fish) [that John caught ]

 (4) の the fish that John caught 全体の樹形図は、次のようなも

   (6) (the fish that John caught )
              N
             / \
            N A
        (the fish) / \
             CVT[S-A] S
              (that) / \
                 N V
                (John) / \
                   VZ N
                 (caught) (the fish)
                       →

(Equi Rule #3)

   (7) that + K-S A(発生)

において、S−A転換子(S-A CVT)that の働きは、単に that を文頭付

   <S−A転換子(S-A CVT) that の働き>
    Step 1. that の文頭付加
    Step 2. 同一名詞(N)認識
    Step 3. 第2名詞(N)消去(発生)

 27-3 [その他のS−A転換子(S-A CVT):which, who など]
 上の that の代わりに、しばしば、次のようなS−A転換子(S-A CVT)

   (i) which

   (8) The Seine is a big river that/which runs through Paris.
   (9) The things that/which he had left in his locker
      disappeared.
   (10) This is the speeding ticket that/which I got last week.

   (ii) who/whom

   (11) A friend of mine that/who studies metal fatigue never
      travels by air.
   (12) The lady that/whom the kidnapper talked to was a
      policewoman.
   (13) I met a woman that/who I thought was my aunt.

  (iii) whose
さらに、of which, of whom の代わりに whose が使われることがあり
ます。

(14)a. The mountain the top of which is covered with snow is
       Mt. Asama.
     b. = The mountain whose top is covered with snow is
       Mt. Asama.
(15)a. The girl the father of whom is a great scientist likes
       mathematics.
     b. = The girl whose father is a great scientist likes
       mathematics.

(16)a. The house in which we once lived is now for sale.
     b. *The house in that we once lived is now for sale.
(17)a. The boss under whom I work used to be a heavy smoker.
     b. *The boss under that I work used to be a heavy smoker.

(18)a. This is the very girl that I've been looking for.
     b. *This is the very girl whom I've been looking for.
(19)a. That's the last thing that I want to do.
     b. *That's the last thing which I want to do.

    restrictive)]
(20)a. The fish which John caught was big. The fish, which John caught, was big. (21) The fish -- John caught it -- was big. (22)a. The book which/that I bought yesterday is very interesting. The book, which/*that I bought yesterday, is very interesting. The man who/that read the book was quite moved. The man, who/*that read the book, was quite moved. (24)a. The pizza that/which the boy delivered was cold. b. The pizza the boy delivered was cold. The president that/whom we voted for resigned. b. The president we voted for resigned. (26) *The president for we voted resigned. (27) The pizza 1 the boy delivered 2 was cold. (28) The president 1 we voted for 2 resigned. 27-6 [the thing which → what]   次の3つの文を比べてみましょう。 (29)a. The first question he asked was what I bought in Mexico. I gave him what I bought in Mexico. Guess what I bought in Mexico. (K-S)、I bought something in Mexico. (30) (what I bought in Mexico) N / \ CVT[S-N] K-S (what) (I bought something in Mexico) (31) I gave him the thing which I bought in Mexico. この what は、S−A転換子(S-A CVT) の which だけでなく、名詞(N)の the thing をも含むものなのです。 (32) (what I bought in Mexico) N / \ N A (the thing) (which I bought in Mexico) | / \ |CVT[S-A] K-S |(which) (I bought the thing in Mexico) || (the thing which → what) (i) what が S-N CVT の場合 (33) Tell me what your name is. (あなたのお名前何ていうのか教えてください) (34) I wonder what happened in the family. (35) I wore what I liked best. (私は一番気にいったものを着た) (36) What was a small village five years ago has developed into a huge town. (5年前までは小さな村だったものが今や大きな町に発展した) (37) They are all what you call baby boomers. (彼等はみんなベビーブーマーと呼ばれる人達です) (38) You must do what you said you would. (39) I can imagine what she is saying. (彼女が何を言わんとしているのか見当がつく) (彼女が言わんとしている事は見当がつく) (40) What he does matches what he says. (彼が何を言うか、と、彼が何をするかは常に一致する) (彼が言ったことはすなわち彼がすることだ) (41) Things are not always what they look like. (物ごとはいつもそれがどのように見えるかということと同じ というわけではない) (物ごとはいつも見た通りとは限らない)  27-7 [in which/that...to → when/where]   さらに、time(s) in which, place(s) in which などの言い換え表現 (variant form)として、time(s) when, place(s) where などがあります。 (42)a. There are occasions in which we feel like cutting classes. b. = There are occasions when we feel like cutting classes. She has always loved the town in which she spent her childhood. b. = She has always loved the town where she spent her childhood. Tell me some specific cases that the rule cannot be applied to. b. = Tell me some specific cases where the rule cannot be applied.
