LESSON １１　文の転換：副詞節

11-a.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
　　文（S）の前に例えば「〜なので」を表す because をつけ、because Sの形にすると、一種
    の副詞(AD)として機能するようになります。

        (1) Because I overslept, I missed the train.
		
    (1)の下線部を樹形図で表すと次のようになります。
 
        (2) (because I overslept)
                      AD
                   ／　 ＼ 
   　　　　　　 because   S
                        （I overslept）

   このような、文(S)から生まれた副詞（AD）は、一般に「副詞節」と呼ばれます。類例としては、
   
        (3) I received a letter three months after she left.
        (4) Light is refracted as it passes through a lens.
        (5) I had counted 22,576 sheep before I fell asleep.
        (6) If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask.
        (7) Since you're no longer a child, you should know better.
        (8) We’ll wait until he arrives.
        (9) The moment she touched him, he turned into stone.
        (10) As far as mathematics is concerned, no one in the class can match him.

    次の２つの下線部は、ともに副詞(AD)節ですが、この２つのif 節には微妙な意味と用法上
    の違いがあります。

        (11) If it rains tomorrow, I will stay home. (条件のif)
        (12) If I were you, I wouldn’t do that. (非現実の if)

     (12) の下線部には｢実はそうではないが｣という｢非現実｣の意味が含まれています。そして
     この｢非現実｣の意味を加えるため動詞が過去形に似た形となっています。

    ｢過去｣の｢非現実｣を表すためには、動詞部分が次のように変化します。

        (13) If we had had a good map, we could have found a short-cut easily.
        (14) If the parents had been more careful, the tragedy would have been 
            prevented.
		
      (13) では、動詞部分が have → had → had hadと can find → could find → 
      could have found   のように２ステップ変化しています。
      次のような変わった例もあります。

      (15) I would be a billionaire now, if I had bought that piece of land at that time.

    ｢非現実｣の意味と形が名詞（N）節や形容詞(A)節の中に見られることもあります。
   
        (16) I wish I were a bird.　　(N節)
        (17) She looked as if she had seen a ghost or something.　（A節）

11-e.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
 　「条件」や「非現実」の意味は、節だけでなく、句や語のレベルで見られることもあります。
    ただし、このような場合、それ自体では「条件」なのか「非現実」なのか、「現在」なのか
    「過去」なのか区別ができません。動詞部分が存在しないからです。しかし、このような場
    合でも、主文の中の動詞の形でこれらを区別できることがあります。

        (18) Without your help, I can not do it.(現在の条件)
        (19) Without your help, I could not do it.(現在の非現実)
        (20) Without your help, I could not have done it.（過去の非現実）
