23-1-NT ［to Ｖの副詞（ＡＤ）的用法とその他の用法］
中尾・児馬（pp.179-180)によれば、不定詞は元来、動名詞と同様動詞起源の
名詞であって、それ自体格を示す接尾変化をもっていた。ＯＥでは主格と対格は -an 、
与格は -ennne であり、この与格が前置詞 to とともに使われた 1) のような例が今日
のto 不定詞の起源である。
(=they came to me to work)
この例では、wyrcan(=work) という動詞が不定詞の与格形 wyrcenne となって
いて、前置詞 to の目的語名詞であったことがよくわかる。この後、ＭＥになって名詞、
形容詞、動詞の接尾辞が水平化（-an, -enne＞-en＞-e）されたため、to が不定詞のマー
カーであると解釈されるようになったのである。
このような歴史的事実を重視する文法家は、いわゆる to 不定詞の副詞的用法
とその他の用法を区別する。例えば、安井（1994, p.647）は前者の to を「一種の接続
詞」（a kind of conjunction)とし、後者の to を「語彙的には空の機能語」（lexically
empty function word)であり、「不定詞標識」(infinitive marker) にすぎないとしてい
る。
このような通時的(diachronic)な研究を重視する立場では、次の 2-a) の to
cut meat は 3) のような構造を持つと考える。
2)a. She used scissors to cut meat.
b. =She used scissors for cutting
つまり、 cut meatという動詞（Ｖ）がいきなり to によって副詞（ＡＤ）となるのでは
なく、一度 ゼロconversionにより名詞化し、その後 to により副詞（ＡＤ）となるので
ある。

23-2-NT-(A) ［副詞的 to Ｖが表すいろいろな意味］
江川（pp.319-320）によれば、副詞的用法の to Ｖは次のような意味を表す。
(i) 目的
1) She was on a diet to lose weight.
(ii) 結果
2) My grandfather lived to be ninety.
(iii) 原因
3) We are delighted to learn of the arrival of your baby.
(iv) 理由
4) What a fool I was to think that she really loves me!
(v) 条件・仮定
5) To look at her, you would never guess her age.
(vi) 一般に形容詞と結合して
6) Don't be so ready to promise. (安請け合いするな）
(vii) 独立の語句として
7) To tell the truth, our profit margin is very low.
このような分類法は、学習英文法ではしばしば使われてきたものであるが、
必ずしも科学的とは言えない。なぜなら、結果の用法とも目的の用法とも言えるものが
ある一方で、原因と判断の根拠はしばしば区別がつかないなどということがおこるから
である。このような意味的な分類法では相補分布にならず、どうしても redundancy が
出るというところがつらいところである。
23-2-NT-(B) ［be easy to は SEMI-MOD］
1)a. This book is easy (for us) to read [/*it]
b.=It is easy (for us) to read this book.
1-a)が1-b)から raising により生まれるいわゆる tough構文であるとする分析は説得力
を失いつつある。(cf.原口・中村, pp.487-489) この本では、1-a) のbe easy to は be
able to などと同じ準Ｖ拡充子とする。(cf.12-10)ただし、be easy for us to という
準Ｖ拡充子はないのでfor us to read 全体を easy にかかるＡＤと考えるべきと
いう意見があるかもしれない。
23-6-NT ［副詞的Ｖingが表すいろいろな意味］
この本で -ing による動詞（Ｖ）の副詞（ＡＤ）化(Ｖ＋-ing ⇒ ＡＤ）とさ
れる形は、伝統的学習英文法ではいわゆる「分詞構文」（participial construction）と
呼ばれる。分詞構文についての解説は江川（pp.344ff)が緻密で網羅的でありおすすめで
あるが、それによると、基本型は、時・理由・付帯状況をあらわすものが多く、
1) Looking down (When I looked down) from the plane, I could see
the east coast of the coral island.
2) Being a farmer (As/Since I am a farmer), I have to get up early.
3) The typhoon hit the city, causing (and caused) great damage.
条件・譲歩を表すこともあるが、例はきわめて少ないという。（p.345)
4) Going ahead (=If you go ahead) for a mile, you will
get to the pier.
5) Admitting (=Though I admit) you have a point, I still think I
am right.
なお、安井（1996, p.223）によれば、分詞構文は付帯状況(attendant
circumstances)を示すものが最も多く用いられ、その半数以上が文中、文尾に位置すると
いう。また、条件、譲歩などを示す場合もあるが、常に明確に区別できるものではなく、
互いの意味領域は部分的に重なっていることが多いという。
23-7-NT ［-ing + 動詞の複合拡充形 ⇒ ＡＤ］
-ing によって副詞（ＡＤ）化された動詞の複合拡充形の例として、Quirk
et al.（1985, p.154）の例をあげる。
1) Having invited you, I expect you to come.
2) Having been working all day, I'm very tired.
3) Having been invited, he should have come.
23-8-NT ［（with）＋Ｎ＋Ｖing］
その他の類例としては、
1) School being over, all the students went home.
2) Night coming on, we made a fire.
3) Weather permitting, we will start tomorrow.
4) The concert (being) over, everyone went away.
5) The table having been cleared, a big cake was brought in.
ＡＤ用法のＶing形の前にＮがつく形は、伝統的な学習英文法では「独立分詞
構文」と呼ばれる。中尾・児馬（p.191）によれば、ＰＥでは分詞構文の主語が主節の主
語と異なる場合、6)のような独立分詞構文になるが、この構文は 7) のような構文に由来
しているという。

これがＭＥになると、与格、対格の区別がなくなり、目的語＋分詞になり、さらに語順の
確立の影響から主格＋分詞へと発達していくのである。
ちなみに、江川(p.347)があげる独立分詞構文の例は、次のようなものである。
(i) 基本型
8) Other things being equal, the difference in price should be
decisive.
(ii) ずっこけ分詞
9) Looking out of the window, the mountains were beautiful
(iii) 慣用句
10) Strictly speaking, this sentence is not grammatical.
(iv) 前置詞withがつく例
11) With darkness closing in, the rescue party decided to break
off the season.
12) With our children at school, we cannot take our cacations when
we want to.
上記「ずっこけ分詞」は、意味上の主語が主文の主語と異なるのに主語を表現していない
分詞（句）のことで一般には「懸垂分詞」（dangling participle)と呼ばれる。

23-9-NT ［there のＮっぽさ］
本文中の例文 50-c) から、名詞（Ｎ）としての there の存在を主張する人が
いるかもしれない。
1) With there being a fork in the road, we lost the way.
(= 本文 50-c)
なお、there にある種の「Ｎっぽさ」が感じられる例としては、
2) There is some truth in his remarks, isn't there?
3) They expect there to be no resistance. (安井、1944, p.661)
23-10-NT ［Ｖ－ＡＤ転換子(V-AD CVT)：when/while...ing］
次の 1-a), 2-a) は、それぞれ、1-b), 2-b) から生まれるとする立場がある。
1)a. While staying in Paris, we fell in with a party of Swiss
tourists.
b. =While we were staying in Paris, we fell in with a party of
Swiss tourists.
2)a. When speaking English, he often makes grammatical mistakes.
b. =When he [speaks/is speaking] English, he often makes
grammatical mistakes.
しかし、次の 3-a) の resembling は、決して 3-b) の resembling ではない。なぜな
ら、resemble は、進行形をとらないからである。
3)a. While resembling his father in appearance, he has inherited
much from his mother in character.
b. *While he is resembling his father in appearance, he has
inherited much from his mother in character.
この本では、Ｖ－ＡＤ転換子（V-AD CVT) -ing の延長線上に while...ing や
when...ing という、いわば、「飛び石転換子」を考える。
23-11-NT ［be busy in/ preparing...］
本文中の56-b)は、しばしば in を伴い次の 1-b) のような形となる。
1)a. Mary is busy preparing for the exam. (=本文 56-b)
b. Mary is busy in preparing for the exam.
この1-a) は、歴史的には、1-b) から in の脱落により生まれたと考えられる。1-a) と
1-b) の樹形図は次のようなものとなる。
